A lot of people aren't aware that Google provides a faster, more thorough, and more powerful search ability than the "Search" function provided by deviantART. Then again, if you're not a subscriber then just about anything is better than the non-existant search function.
To search deviantART via Google, do use the following queries:
To search SUBMISSIONS:
--
site:deviantart.com inurl:deviation -inurl:favourites whatever_other_keywords-- Click here to search SUBMISSIONS
To search PRINTS:
--
site:deviantart.com inurl:print -inurl:step2 whatever_other_keywords-- Can't link to search thanks to deviantART's emoticion parsing. Just copy/paste what's above.
To search USERS:
--
site:deviantart.com "a deviant since" whatever_other_keywords-- Click here to search USERS
To search FORUMS:
--
site:forum.deviantart.com whatever_other_keywords-- Click here to search FORUMS
To search NEWS:
--
site:news.deviantart.com whatever_other_keywords-- Click here to search NEWS
To search JOURNALS:
--
site:deviantart.com inurl:journal whatever_other_keywords-- Click here to search JOURNALS
To search deviantART IN GENERAL:
--
site:deviantart.com whatever_other_keywords-- Click here to search deviantART in general
.:: Searching Specific Galleries
Keep in mind that you can search specific sub-sections (i.e. galleries!) by adding "Category: Put_Category_Here" to your search. For example, to search PHOTOGRAPHY:
site:deviantart.com inurl:deviation "Category: Photography" whatever_other_keywords.:: Searching Ranges of Dates/Numbers
Google lets you search ranges of numbers. Suppose, for example, you know that a deviation you are searching for was submitted in December 2003. You can add
"by * Dec 1..31 2003" to your search (quotes included) to limit your results to submissions occuring in December 2003. The by * is required so that it finds the deviation submission date displayed, and not the date of comments that may be on the deviation itself. If, for some reason, you wanted to limit search results by deviation number, you could just use inurl:2456789..34567890 or whatever range you wish to search through..:: Searching By Title
Google generally gives precidence to keywords that appear in a page's title, but if you want to search specifically in a page's title, use
intitle:WHATEVER or allintitle:WHATEVER1 WHATEVER2. Note that allintitle: must be used as the last query, since anything after it will be required to be in the page's title. So if, for example, you wanted to search for a screenshot by $jark, you would use the query site:deviantart.com inurl:deviation intitle:jark screenshot. This is slightly redundant, as one can easily go to the person's gallery and look for it ... but if someone has many submissions it can be faster and easier to do a quick Googling..:: Search Limitations
Remember the keyword limit in searches is 10, and the
site:deviantart.com and inurl:WHATEVER count as a keyword each..:: Other Issues
Google only has about 2.8 million results for deviantART. This is a tiny fraction of a site with 1 million+ members, nearly 10 million submissions, and countless other news/gallery/poll/journal/forum pages. So just because you don't get a search result doesn't mean that what you're looking for doesn't exist.
> v1.7 - 1.16.04
Added quick links for each query so that all you need to type in are the keywords you're looking for.
> v1.6 - 1.14.04
Added a Helpful Hint about title searching.
> v1.5 - 1.13.04
I realized I was wasting a keyword on some of them, so I revamped it a little bit. Also added numerical range searching info.

Devious Comments
Thanks Rob.

I've been playing with the search terms ... they're not perfect. For example, the print search tends to give a lot of result from the same artist since underneath prints are links to other prints from that artist. So it enters a vicious circle. But, it's better than nothing.
How are people supposed to buy prints if they can't find them, ya know?

I think deviously, therefore, I am deviant.

Spread the word about this ... people need to be able to access stuff that may not be right in front of them. It's quite helpful.
